You see all these Instagram couples living the high life, posting photos of them out and about being so in love it might just be a little bit sickening. In real life, relationships are more work than taking cute couples photographs. Thriving relationships require commitment, love and dedication. But health covers the mind and the body. You don’t just want a thriving relationship; you need to make sure that you are both physically healthy too, so you can enjoy each other’s company well into old age. Here are seven tips on how to develop and maintain both physical and mental health as a couple, to keep your relationship thriving for years to come.

1.     Balanced Diets

Everyone knows how important it is to eat a healthy, balanced diet. Don’t worry, balanced doesn’t mean treats are cut out completely; you’re still allowed to snuggle up on the sofa with a takeaway every now and then, but it shouldn’t be too regular. Eating lots of processed foods with high sugar content and refined carbs can lead to more serious health problems than just putting on a few extra pounds.

2.     Active Activities

Moving our bodies, being outside and staying active all make you feel good. And enjoying activities together builds strong and healthy hearts, physically and emotionally. Go out for walks, bike rides, or even go to the beach for a swim (even more exiting in the winter!). Get yourself out together doing fun and active things that you both enjoy.

3.     Check for Changes

Checking and noticing small changes or symptoms can save lives. For some diseases, symptoms are not that significant; diabetes symptoms include tiredness, thirst, and going to the toilet more often. If you or your partner do notice any diabetes symptoms, book in for a review at the London Diabetes Centre to get some definite answers. They provide professional support and individual plans if it does turn out to be diabetes so you are not left on your own.

4.     Weekend Getaways

Taking a trip with your partner is a sure way to keep the fires of passion burning. Spending quality time one-on-one with no distractions is essential for healthy relationships. Indulge in each other’s company, love like hopeless teenagers, and discover a new place together. Nothing screams romance more than a weekend getaway.

5.      Pamper Each Other

Making your partner feel special and doing something especially for them fills you both with love and admiration. No matter how busy you are, make time for your loved one. Cook them a meal, run them a hot bubble bath or give them a massage. Pampering each other keeps the love alive and your hearts warm.

6.     Communication and Understanding

Communication is considered to be one of the most important aspects of a healthy relationship, but communication doesn’t work if there is no understanding. Yes, communicate your thoughts and feelings in an effective way, but you must also take a step back and view situations from your partner’s point of view to have a healthy relationship.

Physical, mental and relationship health are all intertwined, and maintaining all three is essential to being a healthy and thriving couple.
