BRETTA & CO DOESN’T HAVE A PROMINENT LOCATION: BUT IT’S WORTH SEEKING OUT.
We were invited to a wine tasting evening, which was a revelation. I know a little about red, but not as much about white wines, mainly because whites were not to my taste. All that has changed. I discovered Viore from the Rueda region of Spain: it has depth, it has exquisite flavour, aromas of fruit, white blossoms and fennel, and is quite unforgettable. That was followed by Pinot Gris from the Rheinland-Pfalz region, which didn’t have quite the same impact but was really pleasant, light and crisp.
I’d have to say that the wine of the night for me was: the divine St Laurent, from Germany, (Klein). Its lineage is Pinot from Burgundy. It comes with a wonderful back story about Napoleon and his army creating, not just new legal systems, but planting precious vines as they advanced, with their winning ways, right across Europe, until they reached Russia where Napoleon’s army met its nemesis.
Gary Adlen was a fine host: we were entertained and informed by interesting background stories about where all the wines we tasted originated from, and the painstaking processes involved in creating a fine wine.
Great company and a fine night.
There’s also a meal deal on Mondays and Tuesdays: £15 for a two course meal plus a glass of wine, to take the edge off Christmas shopping, and there are gift wrapped hampers to be had if the Xmas shopping goes to the wall.
There is also an online shopping site selling select fine wines, some of which are quite rare, and chocolates for connoisseurs.
