At a time when almost all of us have spent more time dressing down in loungewear, honing your personal style and fashion sense in 2021 might sound like something that’s nice in theory but pretty unlikely in practice.

However, if you’ve had enough of wearing slippers for Zoom calls, and want to inject some life back into your wardrobe, His & Hers has got you covered.

Here are some simple steps to help you rediscover your signature style.

‘Learn’ to dress well

The reality is that learning to dress well is a skill just like anything else. And that means that it requires a certain degree of practice. After all, you’re not going to try to join the NBA after only shooting a couple of free throws, are you? Luckily, practicing dressing well is pretty easy. It can often be as simple as actually thinking about what you’re wearing rather than just throwing your clothes on thoughtlessly. Consider things like colours, contrast, fits, and the various other factors that impact how your clothes look on you. It’s a simple thing, but putting a little more thought into what you’re wearing is a great first step in finding your signature style.

Figure out what you like

One of the biggest barriers to a lot of men being able to find their own personal style is that they don’t actually know what they like and don’t like when it comes to clothes. A lot of men will say that they just don’t have an eye for fashion but that’s honestly kind of a meaningless phrase. After all, having an “eye” is really just a matter of being able to identify the kinds of things that you do and don’t like. Look at style icons that you really admire and try to pick apart exactly what it is that you like about how they look. Figure out what things the people whose clothes you like have in common and you’ll be able to get a much better sense of the kind of style that you’re trying to create.

Find the right fit

This might well be the biggest factor in helping you dress in a way that makes you look and feel your absolute best. The truth is that the best clothes in the world aren’t going to suit you if they don’t fit properly. You could have the most beautiful, stylish suit in the world but if it’s a size too big you’re just going to look like a kid digging through his dad’s clothes. The same applies if clothes are too small. If your clothes don’t fit properly, they’re never going to look good and that’s something that you’re never really going to be able to get past, no matter what kinds of clothes you buy.

Steal ideas

Just because your style is personal doesn’t mean that it suddenly has to be 100% unique right from the start. The truth is that so much fashion inspiration is about taking your influence from other places. So look at the people whose style you really admire and just steal a few ideas from them. After all, it’s not like you’re likely to be heading out onto the red carpet so who cares if you’ve cribbed a lot of your style from a celebrity or someone else? Over time you’ll start finding ways to put your own spin on your style but there’s nothing wrong with using someone else’s look as a starting point.

Keep things simple

When you’re first looking to develop your own style, it can be kind of overwhelming to create combinations of clothes that look and feel great so the best thing to do at the beginning is to keep things simple. Don’t worry about things like complex patterns and colour combinations. Just stick to a few staple items that you can rely on. A pair of shoes from Mallet for men, a well fitted pair of jeans, sturdy jacket. These are all clothes that are not only stylish but versatile and long lasting so you don’t have to worry about creating a new wardrobe every time you want to switch up your look.

Mix and match

You might assume that you need a lot of clothes to have a diverse and interesting look from day to day, but that’s not true. If you can take those few staple items of clothing in your wardrobe and find ways to mix and match them, you can often develop a style that’s consistent while still allowing for a whole lot of variation. A lot of the time it’s the little accents, patterns, and accessories that make a look distinct so you can often get away with mixing and matching the same clothes plenty of times without ever fully repeating.

It can be kind of overwhelming when you first start trying to find your own personal sense of style. After all, it can often feel as though it’s impossible to even know where to begin. The most important thing to remember is that finding your style is a process. It’s something that often takes a little bit of time. The most important thing to remember is that nothing matters more than how you feel. The other thing to remember is that none of these rules are set in stone. Whatever you’re wearing, if you feel confident and you like the way that it looks, that’s really all that matters. Don’t be afraid to experiment and try new things and don’t let the world tell you how you should look. Finding the style that’s right for you is an intensely personal experience and you should never let anyone try to tell you what you should or shouldn’t wear.
