HIS & HERS CELEBRATES LIFE, FOOD AND DRINK, THE LATIN AMERICAN WAY, AT LAS IGUANAS, LIVERPOOL ONE.
Words: Jean Hill
His & Hers has enjoyed a meal or two at Las Iguanas over the years. The new autumn/winter menu is seriously impressive. We dithered between classic traditional Brazilian Prawn Maracana, and Argentinian gaucho beef. Then there are Mexican burritos…Further afield, Peruvian risotto sounded satisfying, but then Havana club & jerk BBQ ribs come coated in a sticky rum glaze. These are the kind of decisions, you want to have to make.
Las Iguanas is celebrating ten years in Liverpool with a sparkling new look. The quirky restaurant décor reflects the team’s regular tours to Brazil and beyond. Guests will find new splashes of vibrant sunshine colour, and a welcoming, colourful bar area. There is a revamped piazza; where you can take a break from Xmas shopping. Time out to watch the world go by.
There is a buzz and party atmosphere inside. I chose Chilli Con Carne, with a medium smoky chipotle butter kick. Black beans, chunky beef and spring onions created depths of flavour. My companion opted for Bahian Coconut Chicken (a Brazilian dish). The chicken is pan-fried in cumin, coriander and cayenne. It is then cooked in a coconut sauce with ginger, garlic, tomatoes and coriander. It delivers a subtle, sophisticated hit, and renders the chicken, moist and ridiculously tender. Creamy caramel cake was an obvious dessert choice, and it came with dulce de leche, topped with blueberries.
Las Iguanas Liverpool will be open for lunch on Christmas Day. The menu includes: Roast Turkey with all the trimmings, and Argentinean Beef Fillet Empanada served ‘Wellington-style’. There is a vegetarian option, Asado Verduras, flame-grilled aubergine and cauliflower steaks served with halloumi fries. Children under twelve are catered for. Adult guests will receive a complimentary glass of Cava or Brazilian Brahma beer upon arrival to start Xmas the Latin American way.
Happy days: cocktails are available, two for one, all day, every day. Stylish new additions include Patron Silver tequila, honey pomegranate and lime. Las Iguanas commit to using premium spirits, including their own award-winning artisan Magnifica cachaça. The new Guava Caipirinha with Magnifica cachaça, guava, chartreuse and lime, is exclusive to the autumn/winter menu. A DIY cocktail mixing station can be brought to your table with a bottle of Magnifica cachaça (or Havana Club Rum for Mojitos). For those wanting something on the softer side, the Rio Crush, made with grapefruit, passion fruit and cranberry is a zingy, refreshing option.
It was a great evening, surrounded by people relaxing and having fun. It will take some dedication to work through the menu, but I am up for it.
