Las Iguanas

‘Memory takes…poetic license. It omits some details; others are exaggerated, according to the emotional value…for memory is seated predominantly in the heart’: Tennessee Williams,   ‘Night of the Iguana’.

WORDS: Jean Hill

His & Hers had fond memories of Las Iguanas in Liverpool. It is a great venue, with a beautiful mix of ‘Caribbean’ features, beautiful wooden and tiled flooring, and a vibrant predominantly turquoise colour scheme. We had really enjoyed our last visit. Expectations were high.

Las Iguanas has launched its latest menu with 15 new dishes, and an extra share of useful technology. You can download the new Las Iguanas app from the Apple Store or Google Play and you’ll be able to ‘pay at table’. Collect points as you pay, and access Las Iguanas’ new loyalty tiers. Bronze, silver and gold levels open up access to monthly perks and freebies.

Dishes are cooked from scratch by in-house chefs. We discovered an array of tapas dishes, as well as a selection of mains from Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, and Cuba. Tequeños, a new addition, translates into a delicious and popular Venezuelan street snack.  These are cheese filled fried bread sticks served with chipotle butter.

From the tapas menu, diners can choose from Latin American staples. Pork Pibil Tacos with achiote, oregano, orange and lime glaze is delicious. There are plant-based options: one is winter Ceviche with smoked sweet potato purée, Aztec grains, pickled vegetables, avocado aioli, sweet chilli pepper pearls, and sweet potato crisps.

We chose Peanut and Prawn Maracanã and Havana Club and Jerk BBQ Ribs from the mains menu. Prawns arrived in a peanut, chilli, lime and coconut sauce served up in a sourdough bread bowl. There was a hint of coriander, and it is a glorious mix of ingredients that concentrate and seep flavour into the succulent prawns. The rack of ribs came in a sticky rum glaze, topped with crispy onion and chilli, served with slaw, and choice of fries or salad. We had fries and salad. Just saying. The salad is refreshing, hydrating and a healthy option!

It isn’t just the main menu that has received a seasonal makeover! Las Iguanas’ dessert menu has new additions. We chose Pornstar Sundae: a twist on the classic cocktail. It is a concoction of mango sorbet & coconut non-dairy ice cream with a passion fruit, prosecco & vanilla purée, crushed meringue, fresh mango & passion fruit. It is also quite blissfully, culinary fun.

One of the Bottomless Brunch additions is Huevos Divorciados. A Mexican classic: it comprises of two eggs served on blue corn tortillas, crushed avocado and red tomato and green tomatillo salsas. Las Iguanas’ impressive selection of cocktails and mocktails are available 2 for 1 all day*: check for details.

Giving back to the larger community remains a central commitment. Las Iguanas work with the LATA Foundation to support grass-roots projects throughout Latin America and Mexico. End Youth Homelessness receives a contribution for every Christmas party booking. Service is friendly and efficient, and it is a fun and relaxing experience.
