HIS & HERS TAKES A LOOK AT HOW TO MAKE THE NOTORIOUSLY STRESSFUL PROCESS OF MOVING HOUSE RUN MORE SMOOTHLY!

For many people moving house can be one of the most stressful events in their life, after the death of a relative. To put it in other words, changing homes ranks very high on the lists of stressful things that could happen to you. Admittedly, depending on who you ask and how far in the future the date of the move is, you might get different responses.

Indeed, it can be highly stressful to think of moving homes, when you’re in the middle of packing your belongings in your old house and trying to remember what the new one looks like – whether you’re a buyer or a tenant, it’s fair to say that most people get a maximum of two visits in their future home before moving in: it’s never enough to remember the design and layout.

Besides, there is a natural emotional connection with the place you’ve lived in until now, which can affect your perception of the move. So, how do you keep things stress-free before, during and after the move?

#1. Organisation

Planning your move is the best way to ensure that you don’t forget anything. If you’re familiar with Trello, for instance, you’ll appreciate its list functions to guide you through every step of the process. Indeed, you can make a list of all the things to remember when moving home, from sorting out your outstanding utility agreements and meters to choosing the best-suited solicitor to carry out the property transaction on your behalf. Indeed, starting as early as possible with your preparations can help you to keep a cool head in the long term. That’s precisely why many homeowners keep to-do lists for their administrative requirements, their belongings, their financial checks, and even their mail redirection. This can save you a lot of troubles, and help you keep an overview of what needs to happen.

#2. Creating your relaxing bubble

Regardless of your organisational skills, there is a natural uneasiness that comes with moving. The first time you enter your new home, it will be packed with boxes, and you’re likely to be exhausted from the process. Don’t work through the nervous fatigue to unpack and prepare the rooms. Instead, focus on yourself. You can free some space in the main room or on the patio to do some relaxing exercises. If you know some yoga movements, they can work wonders to release the tension. If you’re not a  yoga lover, you can simply lie down on a mat and let go of your worries. Feel the vibe of your new home.

#3. A warming house party just for you

What will your first meal be? Most people can’t cook on the first evening, because there’s too much unpacking to do. Besides, you might not have taken any food with you. So, your first meal is likely to be a takeaway

. Make the most of it to indulge and pick food that makes you happy. Chilli, for instance, releases natural endorphins, which enhance your mood. Dark green vegetables, such as spinach and cabbage, flight the stress hormone cortisol. So you could order a Chinese or an Indian meal with plenty of these.

From stressful to stress-free, your move can run smoothly if you make sure you’re looking after yourself all the way through the process. While planning ahead is crucial, you also have to remember your mental health. De-stress in your new home and bless your first night with a joyful meal.
