THE IMPORTANCE OF DELEGATING

delegating

IN AN IDEAL WORLD, WE’D ALL BE DASHING ABOUT GETTING STUFF DONE IN A DAZZLING WHIRL OF PRODUCTIVITY LIKE SUPERMAN OR WONDER WOMAN ON THEIR BEST DAY.

However, in reality, most of us have a few core strengths and a few areas where we don’t necessarily excel. Personally, I can remember somewhat dramatically muttering that ‘logistics is a nightmare!’ while inelegantly hobbling about in heels attempting to deliver a box of magazines. Lessons were learnt on that day, namely that logistics isn’t necessarily a nightmare. I’m just really not great at heavy lifting. Also, magazines are surprisingly weighty when boxed up. And finally, that sometimes it’s OK to delegate work that you’re not the best at. In this case, working with another company that was geared up to do mass mail outs, leaving me free to do a smaller number of hand deliveries worked like a charm. (I’ve also been calling in favours from my family and friends for years when it comes to magazine deliveries and storage. Ahem, so if you’re reading, it’s been enormously appreciated!)

Here are a few other times when I think it’s worth delegating…

When you have a list of things that you would like to do, but which you aren’t actually doing:

Whether it’s cleaning the bathroom ’til it sparkles or dragging yourself to the gym, most of us have things that we promise ourselves we’ll do every weekend. And then don’t. Once these things that we feel we really ought to tackle but don’t start stacking up, this can start to affect your confidence, leaving you questioning whether you have what it takes to make the changes you want to in your life, both big and small.

Sometimes, all it takes is making one change to kickstart a new habit that can help you to feel more empowered and confident. However, change is hard, and if you’ve been trying and failing to cultivate a particular habit for years, it could be time to enlist some outside help. For example, if you know that going to the gym would make you feel healthier and more energised, but you just can’t bring yourself to take action, hiring a personal trainer so that you have appointments in your diary to stick to and someone to keep you motivated while you build a new habit of gym-going could prove really helpful.

When you don’t have a specific skill set:

If you’re self-employed, it can be difficult to adjust to suddenly having to think about your tax liability. And if your business grows, you can find yourself attempting to be an expert at a whole host of things virtually overnight. Enlisting the help of an accountant or other relevant expert can save a lot of stress and hours spent staring bleakly at your computer screen!

When you could earn more doing something else:

Of course we all need hobbies and not everything we do will revolve around earning money. So if, for example, you love knitting but never plan to earn a penny that way, more power to your elbow! However, if you’re using your time off to tackle fiddly DIY projects that you hate, or feel like you’re spending all your time off cleaning, perhaps it’s worth working out how much you earn per hour and thinking about whether you could afford to delegate certain everyday tasks.

If you have any tips on delegating, we’d love to hear them. Please keep us posted in the comments below.
