It’s that time of year again when the His & Hers team alternates between focusing on last-minute Christmas plans and starting to think about what we want to achieve in the New Year. After the Christmas celebrations, there’s a good chance that you’ll find us obsessing over some interior design magazines and pondering how we’d like to update our homes in the New Year. If you also have a few home improvements you’d like to make in 2019, here are our top tips for adding value to your home:
Focus on comfort:
It doesn’t matter how stylish your home looks; if you’ve been shivering your way through the Christmas holidays, you won’t be enjoying your time at home to the fullest (or relaxing as much as you’d like!) Replacing draughty windows with double or triple glazed windows, choosing a reputable window installer like Associated Windows, won’t just make your home feel cosier. It’ll also make it much more energy efficient, helping to keep your heating bills in check and enabling you to do your bit for the environment from the comfort of your sofa! And as an added bonus, this will also reduce the sound of street noise, making your evenings feel a little more peaceful.
Be realistic:
It can be tempting to fall in love with the minimalist design scheme you see on the pages of a magazine, or to want to re-design your home based on a beautiful luxury hotel you’ve stayed in. However, it’s always worth taking stock of whether your design dreams are in keeping with reality. For example, if you love to snack on the sofa and have been known to spill the occasional glass of red wine in the living room, a pale sofa may cause you more stress than it’s worth. Also, when planning your garden, it’s worth thinking about how much time you’d be happy to spend maintaining it. If the closest you get to nature is unwrapping a bunch of flowers and putting them in a vase once in a while, a low-maintenance garden could be your best bet.
Go back to basics
When you’ve lived in a house for a while, it can be hard to look at the space objectively. However, the start of a new year can be a good time to try and look at your home with a fresh pair of eyes, asking yourself what works and what doesn’t. Are you still happy with the layout of the space, or could a few pieces of furniture be moved around to make your house look and function better and are there a few repairs that could be made in one go to save you a bit of hassle every day?
If you’re planning to make any changes to your home in the New Year, or have just finished a renovation project, we’d love to hear from you. Please tell us all about it in the comments below.
