As His & Hers counts down to spring (which officially starts on 20th March) we’ve been thinking about how to spend more time in nature away from digital distractions while the sun’s shining. Whether you’re planning to go on a yoga retreat, booking a sunshine break, or craving a walking holiday, now’s a great time to start planning, because you can’t beat having nice stuff booked in your diary!

If you’re looking for some inspiration for a walking holiday, the His & Hers team has got you covered with our top tips:

  • Be Realistic. Sometimes it can be tempting to join a gym or book an activity break on the basis that future you will have much more energy and drive than you’ve ever had in the past. However, what you enjoy right now tends to be a pretty good indicator of what you’ll like in the future. So if you tend to enjoy gentle walks, punctuated by stop-offs at nice pubs or eateries, plan your days accordingly.
  • Pack for all Seasons. If you’re preparing for a walking holiday in the UK, it’s well worth packing warm and waterproof clothing so you’re covered in the event of an unexpected downpour or a sharp fall in temperature as evening falls. Also, look for retailers like Orvis that offer easy-to-layer jackets, coats and gilets amongst other wardrobe essentials. Wearing layers will keep you warmer than relying on one big coat and will also give you the option to start shedding layers throughout the day if the sun comes out and you find yourself warming up throughout your walk.
  • Think about your Footwear. It sounds so obvious, but when lots of walking’s on the agenda, you really don’t want to be setting out in uncomfortable shoes. Think carefully about the shoes you choose and aim to wear them in before your walking holiday to avoid rubbing and chafing. It may also be worth treating yourself to some really nice socks as your feet will be working harder than usual and deserve the added comfort!
  • Do your Research. You’ll find plenty of online guides like this one by the Independent on the best walking holidays available, and it’s well worth spending the time thoroughly considering your options. Firstly, the His & Hers team loves sitting with a nice cup of tea looking at holiday options. Secondly, the more you know about your walking holiday options, the better your chance of identifying the perfect break for you.

We’re very proud to bring you this feature in association with Orvis – the perfect source of inspiration for clothing for the great outdoors. The clothing inspiration is theirs, but the words are all our own. If you’ve recently been on a walking holiday and have any recommendations, we’d love to hear from you. Please share your recommendations in the comments section below. We’d also like to hear about your best and worst choices when packing for a holiday!
