IF YOU ARE LUCKY ENOUGH TO LIVE IN NEW BRIGHTON, YOU ALREADY KNOW WHAT AN AMAZING PLACE IT IS. IT BOASTS A FINE THEATRE, THE FLORAL PAVILION, THE LIGHT CINEMA, SPECTACULAR RIVER VIEWS, AND A WHOLE RAFT OF LOCAL ATTRACTIONS. IT IS ALSO, IMPORTANTLY, A PLACE TO CELEBRATE WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS, AND ENJOY GREAT FOOD AT INDEPENDENT EATERIES.
Words: Jean Hill
The His & Hers team were privileged to be there when Joanna Jones launched Blackberry Grove just over two years ago. It has grown to be successful, initially, by word of mouth. Recently a motorist in the local area stopped to ask for directions to the restaurant. She had been reliably informed that it catered for meat eaters, those who need to be gluten free, vegetarians and vegans with equal skill and flair. I adore the flavour and flaky texture of the sea bass, and the chips, are perfect. Crispy and salty outside, fluffy and satisfying inside. Breakfast or burger, it is all good. Blackberry Grove attracts accolades. They already have a Wirral Tourism Award for ‘Outstanding Customer Care’. And just recently, at the Eat Out Awards, were judged ‘Best Independent Operator’ in UK. Truly impressive achievements.
Joanna believes that she, and her award winning team, are ready for a new challenge. The time is right to open a new restaurant in Liverpool. This is a crowd-funding venture, that offers opportunity and a ground-breaking result. Gary Usher, who recently launched ‘Wreckfish’ using crowd-funding, believes it to be a solid democratic process. It means people get to choose and have a stake (or possibly steak) in the kind of restaurant they want. It is a chance to support an independent. Please check out the link to Joanna’s kick-starter restaurant project below. Get involved.

The Olive Tree
If you travel a little bit further down Victoria Road, you will come to the Olive Tree. It has recently changed hands, though happily retains its reputation for fine food. This is a bistro that offers a wide range, including a pre-theatre menu. You can choose either two or three courses at reasonable prices. There is a vegetarian option with aubergine moussaka. Meat options include Hunters chicken, and a succulent 8oz burger. Personally, predictably, I am a big fan of the beautifully battered fish and chips.
There is a warm intimate atmosphere, and good service.
