A great gastronomic experience amongst blossoms at The Watering Can

The Watering Can

The location is idyllic. There are so many impressive parks beyond Liverpool city centre. Greenbank Park can be found off Smithdown Road, which is a 15-minute drive from the city. The park is utterly beautiful. There are sweeping trees, lush green lawns and a circular bedding area behind the Watering Can restaurant. We were a little early. Anyone who knows us well, knows this is unusual, and we took advantage by having a wander around the lovely surroundings.

Architecturally, the restaurant fits perfectly into its environment. It looks like a splendid old-fashioned conservatory with a sloping roof, with spacious rooms off the main-way and a flower infused outdoor eating space.

We were warmly welcomed. The venue is an integral part of the park. The bar area boasts intricately crafted wooden cabinets. There is a stunning bespoke stained-glass plaque, with flowers, in pride of place. People were happily chatting as we passed their tables and there was a sense of total relaxation.

The lunch menu consists of small plates, rather fancy sandwiches and larger dishes. I started with sautéed king prawns, spicy tomato salsa and marie rose sauce. The prawns had a wonderful crunchy, yet succulent slightly spicy taste.

Our editor opted for a posh fish finger sandwich. This consisted of coley goujons, warm tartare sauce and baby gem lettuce on a toasted brioche bun. It would be fair to say that she loved the combination. I chose a falafel wrap with deep fried falafel, roasted Mediterranean vegetables, hummus, vegan pesto, mayonnaise and warm beetroot. This was deeply satisfying, a wonderful marrying of ingredients so that the whole was much more than the sum of its parts. I suspect the beetroot was the ingredient that helped work the magic.

The Malbec was delicious and this is a restaurant that makes good coffee. The staff are really friendly; they were really busy on the day, yet really efficient. We thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience and we intend to return as soon as we can. With a beautiful park backdrop, this is healthy eating at its best.
