Life is all about change. The way we grow from children to adults is a change, and all of the major events in life tend to bring changes with them, like moving out, getting married, starting a new job, etc. Even the bad changes that involve loss or risks to health are part of what makes the world go round. Change is simply a part of what makes us!
But sometimes, life can get pretty humdrum and routine. It can feel like you’re living the same day over and over again, simply because very few things happen outside of what’s been pre booked into your calendar. You go to work, you come home, you might hit the gym – that’s all fine. However, if you’re under stimulated and brimming with frustration because nothing else is going on, it’s clear there’s not enough change going on to keep you going!
The changes you’re after should be healthy for you, and should try to bring a new level of fun and enjoyment into your life. Anything you want to try should be something that uplifts your wellbeing, and makes use of your time in a way that benefits both your brain and body.
To ensure that, it’s worth writing down a list of the changes you’d like to make. This can be a daunting task, but everyone has at least one thing they’d like to turn around. But if you’re really struggling to put together an idea of things to improve on, check out the list we’ve made down below.

Get Some More Sunlight
More sunlight, more Vitamin D, leading to stronger bones and muscles, better mood, and a literally sunnier outlook. Really, when you have a healthy level of vitamin D in your body, you’re going to feel better all round.
There’s no one set level for vitamin D, but there are medical guidelines out there that most people follow. In general, however, it’s best to get out and about and try to get some sun exposure most days. Make sure you’re wearing sunscreen when you do so, but spending at least 20 minutes outside whilst the sun is shining will help to keep your body topped up.
Not only that, but as human beings, we evolved to rise with the sun and settle down for sleep after it’s gone down again. It’s part of the reason we enjoy sunny days so much, especially the long kind in the height of summer. Just being out when there are rays to catch can make all the difference to your mood, especially with a bit of fresh air floating round too!
Start Setting Some Boundaries
Boundaries are important in any and all kinds of relationships. They’re a way to let someone know what you’re willing to accept in the way you’re treated. They’re not tools to try and make someone act the way you want them to, and they shouldn’t be used in this way, but you can set some ‘ground rules’.
Doing so will ensure both you and the other person can feel content and happy. If these boundaries are then overstepped, it’s up to you how to proceed in the relationship. If they’re continually overstepped, you know the other person doesn’t quite respect what you’ve put down.
With boundaries in place, it’s much easier to notice disrespectful and uncaring behaviours. If that’s something you’ve had to deal with a lot in life, making sure you communicate boundaries could help you to get the most out of your relationships.
Take it Slow When Changing a Habit You’re Unhappy with
We all have habits we’re not quite proud of. Whether this is smoking or drinking, or you always leave the dinner dishes until the morning after, they can carry a sense of embarrassment or shame with them.
And whether the habit is genuinely unhealthy or simply just a little disorganised, the emotional impact of living with them can be very damaging. But trying to change a habit you’re unhappy with all in one go – and indeed, trying a ‘cold turkey’ approach – can make things worse.
Sudden changes like this can make it a lot harder to ignore cravings, navigate changes in mood, and you’re much more likely to beat yourself about things going wrong. That’s why it’s so important to try a slow but steady approach instead.
You can do this with any habit you’re not really happy with, and you’re much more likely to make a meaningful change that has a positive impact on your life.
Say you want to stop smoking. Start by reducing the amount of cigarettes you have per day, then move onto less harmful nicotine delivery methods like flavoured nicotine pouches or vaping. You may even find these methods more enjoyable thanks to the flavourings in the products.
Taking it step by step and slowly reducing your need to smoke is the goal here, and going slowly gives you a chance to get used to the change as it goes on.
Similarly, if you want to start cleaning the kitchen on the same day you cooked, you could start to make a change by cutting the task into pieces. For example, clean only a quarter of the dishes you used now and leave the others until morning, and then slowly increase the amount you do on the same day.
Redecorate Your Space
Whatever space you have to call your own, whether you’re a homeowner or you’re renting a place, or even if you’re living with family, try changing that too. We don’t mean moving out or finding somewhere else to live – although that is an option, if it’s something you’re keen on – but we do think a hardy bit of redecorating could be beneficial for you.
After all, the space we make for ourselves reflects who we are, what we want, and what makes us feel good. If you’re spending time in a home that doesn’t provide any of that for you, the first thing to do is slap a new coat of paint on the walls! Go for a colour that you like, and forget about any trends or what would be easiest to keep clean; choose something you genuinely will enjoy seeing on a daily basis.
Of course, if you are a renter, you may not have the option to paint the walls. That doesn’t leave you without any power here, though. Stick on wallpaper, that can be easily removed when your tenancy comes to an end, can be applied to the walls without leaving any marks.
You could also hang things up with command hooks to cover any bare surfaces you’re not happy with. Back in the day this would have involved drapes and tapestries, but these days you can hang anything that can be easily attached to the ceiling or top of the wall. Bits of paper, handcrafts you’ve spent time on, etc. You can even hang blankets and sofa throws, if they have a pattern or design you really like.
Long story short, the more you see yourself in your own space, the more you’re going to enjoy that space. It’s going to feel fresh and fitting, and even on boring Friday nights where you’re home alone and experiencing FOMO, you’re going to be satisfied with the space you’ve made for yourself.
These are the areas we’ll always recommend starting on when healthy differences are needed in life! If you’re not sure where to begin, keep those above in mind.
