We had an invite to dine in a private dining room in San Carlo Liverpool. The room was beautifully decorated with mirrors and paintings, with an elegant art deco theme. It is the season for group bookings and this would make a beautiful setting for a Christmas or birthday party.
We (at His & Hers) met up with a group of friendly people and one or two friends, that made for a really fun evening with interesting conversation.
We began, what turned out to be a real Italian feast, with focaccia al tartuffo with fior di latte and truffle. Fior di latte is a sweet, light and delicate cheese (flower of milk); subtle and delicious. Truffle proved the star though.
We opted for chicken liver paté on the Antipasta menu. This had a rich, smooth (creamy consistency) with a brandy flavour, served with sourdough and a Chianti dressing. Loved it. There is a chicken salad option with Prosciutto, cheese, pear and walnut: beautiful complementary combinations. There is also beef with mustard.
Then came the mains! Our editor chose ravioli porcini: handmade mushroom ravioli with creamy porcini sauce. Porcini mushrooms have an earthy, meaty flavour and our editor loved this dish. I chose pappardelle all’anatra, which is a Tuscan dish. The duck flavour was prominent with a fabulous ragu sauce. The long ribbon, egg pasta was so fresh. There are other tempting dishes on the menu: slow cooked beef and spaghetti with king prawns, hot chilli and olives in the mix.
Dolci (dessert) arrived. I had opted for frangipane alla pesca: peach and almond cake with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream. This was a culinary feat: it was full of peachy flavour and softness. Yet not a hint of sogginess in the cake. Just perfect. There is also chocolate and almond cake as another option. Add to these: panna cotta, tiramisu and meringue.
Great company, beautiful food immaculately presented. The attention to detail was impressive. The accompanying Italian red and white wines were delicious.
San Carlo comes highly recommended: just a lovely experience and the main restaurant on ground floor level is stylish, welcoming and the food is superb.
