Indigo Greens, which has a restaurant on Queens Drive and is one of the six kitchens at Duke Street Market, is up for Best Vegan Restaurant in the UK and is the only Liverpool restaurant to be included in the awards’ shortlist.
WORDS: Jean Hill
His & Hers attended the launch of Duke Street Market, and we were totally impressed with the quality and variety of food to be found there. Indigo Greens was really popular that evening, and it is easy to understand why with their emphasis on creative cuisine. The Market is a beautiful space, close to the city centre, and is becoming a favourite place with people who love good food, that is served to you at the table.
The plant-based restaurant was founded by couple Patti Bullock and Mark Aston who are both from Liverpool. After going vegan, the duo found it difficult to dine out at that time, and with Patti’s chef background, created their own impressive offering.

Now, Indigo Greens is a favourite amongst fellow vegans and carnivores alike. As attitudes have changed, vegetarian and vegan cuisines have gone mainstream. People are eating less meat and discovering the joys of plant based foods, when prepared by talented chefs.
Favourites from their menu include the Full Indigo Grill; a vegan full English breakfast, and the Rainbow Roast. My mother’s generation often cooked ‘blind’ scouse (without meat) so it is a solid tradition to have scouse on the menu in Liverpool. There is vegan Vish N Chips, beer battered banana blossom, sweet potato wedges, minted mushy peas and fruity curry sauce.
Indigo Greens is in contention alongside diners and restaurants ranged around the country. They span from Brighton, to Norwich and London; from Glasgow, to Sheffield, Manchester and Cardiff. Owner and chef Patti said: “We’re absolutely ecstatic to have been shortlisted in the national Veg Fest awards for Best Vegan Restaurant. It’s an honour to be acknowledged alongside some other really popular plant-based eateries.” Co-owner Mark added: “We worked really hard at Indigo Greens to deliver on quality, flavour and service and we’re so grateful to all of our guests who have supported us and continue to do so by visiting our restaurant and kitchen at Duke Street Market.”
