Merseyside mental health charity, the Open Door Centre, is aiming to raise a few laughs by unveiling a new art exhibition, designed specifically to make people smile. The Laughin’ exhibition – a joint collaboration with Liverpool creative agency Black & Ginger – is set to launch with a preview evening on Thursday (5 December) at new Baltic Triangle venue Chapters of Us.

Showcasing work from 25 global artists, designers and illustrators, the touring exhibition will also run at The Shed (Jamaica Street) in the Baltic Creative from 9 December – 2 January before moving to the Open Door Centre in Birkenhead from 6 – 10 January.

As part of the Laughin’ exhibition, artists were invited to create a piece of art powerful enough to spark a laugh or smile. The initiative has attracted interest from around the world with work created by artists from as far afield as Argentina and Sydney featuring in the exhibition.

A series of limited edition prints and a special coffee table book, displaying all 25 illustrative and graphic pieces of work in the exhibition, have also been produced with a percentage of the profits being donated to the Open Door Centre.

The Laughin’ exhibition is the brainchild of Alex Frech, managing director at Black & Ginger, who curated the exhibition as part of the agency’s pledge to support the Open Door Centre. He said: “The Laughin’ exhibition, named after the well-known local phrase, was inspired by the charity’s unique approach to helping young people to overcome anxiety and depression through creative therapeutic support.

“Mental health is a growing concern, particularly among young people and we are proud to be supporting the Open Door Centre by curating this innovative exhibition to help raise awareness of the charity’s vital work. At the beginning of the project, we set a challenge for creatives across the globe to make people smile and we have been blown away by the overwhelming response from artists. The power of the smile is truly infectious.”

Greg Edwards from the Open Door Centre, said: “Collaborating with the team at Black & Ginger has been a real pleasure and we can’t wait to unveil the Laughin’ exhibition to the public. The premise behind the exhibition is simple; to make people smile. Every piece of artwork featured is truly uplifting and we are looking forward to raising as many smiles and laughs as we can over the coming weeks.”

The Laughin’ exhibition is free to attend.
