Many motorists are reluctant to make the switch to an electric car due to rumours that they hear, but the truth is that many of these are nothing more than myths and now is actually a great time to make the switch with many perks to driving an electric car. So, read on to separate fact from fiction and to find the truth about electric cars.
Options are Limited
One of the most common things that you hear people say about EVs is that there aren’t many to choose from, so they are not well-suited to different types of motorist. While this might have been true several years ago, the truth is that now practically every manufacturer has an electric car available and there is a handful to choose from in each class with many popular models also being made electric. If you are unsure about whether or not to make the plunge, you could look to lease an electric car as a way to see if it is for you without committing to buying. With the proposed 2030 ban on the sale of petrol and diesel, you can be sure that there will be many more available in the coming years, too.
They Need Constant Charging
Another misconception is that these cars have very little battery life, which means that they need to be charged all the time which can make travelling long distances an issue. Range anxiety was previously an issue but the battery technology has improved drastically, which means that there are models that can drive as far as 700 miles on one charge (although around 300 is more common).
Charging Takes Hours
Following this point, many people also believe that it will take hours to charge an electric car. Naturally, it will take longer than filling up with petrol, but there are rapid chargers which can do the job in around an hour. Additionally, home charging points can charge the battery overnight and, as above, the range should not be an issue for most motorists.
It is Hard to Find Charging Points
Another major myth surrounding charging is that it is hard to find any charging points. This may have been the case a few years ago, but nowadays electric charging points actually outnumber petrol stations and you can easily find your nearest one online. Again, the increased range also makes this much less of an issue too.
These are the most common myths that you hear about electric cars and they are far from the truth. While previously some of these may have been an issue, the truth is that the industry has developed rapidly in recent years with manufacturer’s realising that electric cars are the future. This means that now is a great time to switch and there are many benefits to doing so.
