Slim’s has many reasons to celebrate, because it has built up quite a reputation. A New York style diner fits perfectly into the bustle of Bold Street. Their signature dishes: chicken, with buttermilk strips, coated in cornflakes is one; BBQ corn ribs, with sriracha mayo, with chili and garlic, is another. Both are delicious and pretty much exclusive to Slim’s. The chicken combines buttermilk, lush tenderness, with crispy tangy flakes, and the corn ribs cause more of a stir, and applause than pork spare ribs.

Slim’s, Bold Street’s New York Style diner, has been shortlisted in the National Burger Awards. The restaurant, which opened in August 2019, has already made waves in the hospitality industry, bagging the national nomination for its signature double cheeseburger. It is packed with a handmade double beef burger topped with cheese on a seeded brioche bun, lettuce, house pickles and Slim’s special burger sauce.
The burger is one of 16 to be recognised in the National Burger Awards. Slim’s Head Chef Jake Humphrey will now battle it out on Wednesday 19 February in London, alongside 15 other establishments from across the UK to be crowned the best burger of the year and win a whopping £1,000. The live cook-off will see each chef put to the test across three rounds, against a strict time limit. They will have to recreate the signature burger that was chosen for the final. There is an interesting twist: chefs need to conjure up a ‘technical’ burger made from ingredients selected by competition sponsors, plus a vegan burger.
The burgers will be judged by a panel of industry experts including the National Burger Awards 2019 winner, Nick Watkins of El Perro Negro. .Jake, head chef, said: “I’m really excited to represent Slim’s and Liverpool when I head to London in February. I’ll be taking part in a national competition and hope I can bring back the award for best burger! No matter the outcome on the day, we’re all honoured to have been recognised in such a prestigious award.”
Liverpool is becoming quite a hub for fine food. And it is great to see Slim’s contesting for a prestigious award and taking up the vegan challenge. So much to celebrate around the food scene in Liverpool.
