THINKING OF SETTING UP YOUR OWN COMPANY? HERE’S HOW TO GET STARTED

SEVEN YEARS AGO, WE TOASTED THE LAUNCH OF HIS & HERS MAGAZINE WITH A COCKTAIL OR SEVERAL. IT WAS SO EXCITING TO SEE THE FIRST COPIES OF THE MAGAZINE HOT OFF THE PRESSES AND TO START MAKING PLANS FOR THE NEXT EDITION.

However, to get to the fun bit, there was lots of hard work behind the scenes. For starters, if you’ve never set up a limited company before, just the prospect of filing the paperwork so that you have an actual company, rather than just a dream, is strangely daunting.

We’d initially considered enlisting some help from a solicitor or an accountant to set up the company, but after getting some good advice from friends who already had established businesses, we learned that filing your company formation paperwork online tends to be so fast and easy (not to mention cheap) that you really don’t need to enlist the experts.

In fact, this part of the process was so straightforward, fast and inexpensive that we ended up submitting a company formation form for a separate events company just in case we decided to branch out into events in a big way (we didn’t, so if you’d like to launch His & Hers Events, please do feel free to go for it!)

If you’re on the verge of setting up your own company for the first time, there are plenty of times when it will pay off to get some expert advice (for example, unless you’re really well organised and are a whizz with figures, a good accountant will be worth their weight in gold, quite possibly literally, when filing all of your tax returns for the first time).

However, our experience was that filing your companies formation paperwork is one of those things that sounds terrifying and really isn’t. Plus, we’ve included a web link at the end of this feature, where you can set up a limited company in the UK with prices starting from just ยฃ9.99. In our experience, this is something you can do in around the amount of time it takes you to savour a nice cup of tea. In fact now we think about it, maybe it wasn’t the prospect of form filling that scared us all those years ago. Really, it was probably just the enormity of biting the bullet and finally changing His & Hers Magazine from a dream into a reality.

If you’re just about to set up your own company, or have just done so, we’d love to hear from you. Alternatively, if you’ve been in business for years and have some advice to share on where you wish you’d saved money, or where you wish you’d spent more, when you were starting out, please share your thoughts in the comments section below.
