The Wheelbarrow

At His & Hers we look forward eagerly to our visits to the Watering Can in Greenbank Park, Liverpool. The restaurant fits perfectly into its leafy surroundings. We were warmly welcomed and led through a gloriously supersized ‘conservatory’ to our warm, cosy seating. Being surrounded by subtle festive lighting, foliage and flowers has a wonderfully soothing effect on a person.

There is something about meeting up for Sunday roast that translates into a family and friends enjoyable and regenerating ritual. My companion was literally breaking into homemade bread with rich Pancetta butter, which I felt the need to sample, even though I had my own starter. The King prawn cocktail, with Bloody Mary mayonnaise was a perfect creation. The prawns were plump and succulent and the piquant, yet delicately seasoned sauce enhanced their flavour.

Watering Can Sunday Roast

We made the beginners’ mistake of trying to order extra sides of ‘roasties’, veg and gravy. The dinner comes with all these essentials and the servings are quite generous! We both opted for free range chicken with pork and caramelised leek stuffing. The chicken had that ‘old fashioned’ taste, truly moist and full of flavour. The stuffing was moreish: the caramelised element provided the extra wow factor. The carrots were honey roasted, which made them delectably sweet. The gravy wafted of cooking juices in a really good way. The Yorkshire puddings were, well huge. That did not interfere with their lightly chewy goodness. I am smiling now, remembering how good it all tasted. Just spending time relaxing with people you care about is special. This restaurant makes that an even more special experience because there is something elemental and renewing about being close to nature.

The service is friendly and efficient. The staff really care that you have a good experience. The Watering Can is open 9am until 7pm Monday to Sunday. You need to book for Sunday lunch only, and you will need to pay a deposit (well worth doing).

We meandered, for a short while, in Greenbank Park feeling pretty contented with life, in what could otherwise be stressful times. And then magically a double rainbow of wondrous dimensions appeared before us, stretching across the sky. Utterly beautiful and a perfect ending to our visit.
