Grand National

The Grand National is a huge event on the sporting calendar in the UK as it brings together betting, sport and fashion in a day which has something for everyone who is in attendance in Liverpool. If you are planning to go the Grand National at Aintree Racecourse in April for the first time, here is everything you need to know when it comes to what to wear, who to bet on and what you can expect from the most famous race day in the world.

The Grand National Stands out above Any Other Horse Race in the World

The Grand National is a steeplechase which dates all the way back in 1839 when the aptly named Lottery was the first-ever winner of the race. Since then it has become a huge betting contest which attracts many once a year punters.

70,000 people were in attendance at Aintree for the 2019 Grand National to see Tiger Roll win the race for the second consecutive year and he proved to be a popular winner as he went off as the 4/1 favourite.

What makes the Grand National so unique is that the horses have to jump bigger obstacles than the standard National Hunt race which makes it an exciting contest to follow and has often thrown up some surprising results, like in 2009 when outsider Mon Mome was successful at odds of 100/1.

Tiger Roll a Good Bet for Third Straight Win

Most people who go the races, particularly at the Grand National, enjoy having a flutter on the action. The betting for the race this year is headed by Tiger Roll at 7/1 and he is proving to be one of the most popular Grand National betting tips to complete his hat-trick.

Red Rum is the only other horse in the history of the race to win the Grand National three times, however, Tiger Roll has a great chance of equalling that record. The Irish horse, who is trained in by Gordon Elliott, was a comfortable winner in 2019 and he will take some stopping on his return to Aintree.

If it is an outsider you’d prefer to bet on in the race, then One For Arthur is available at 50/1. The Scottish-trained horse won the race in 2017 and if he returns back to his best form, he is certainly overpriced in the betting.

Dust off Your Dress and Hat

A lot depends on which enclosure you have chosen to go into on the day. If you have opted to treat yourself and you are enjoying hospitality, then the dress code will be much more formal so men are advised to wear a suit, while women normally wear a dress with a hat.

For those attending with standard tickets though, the dress code is a little more relaxed, although do bear in mind that sportswear and fancy dress are not permitted. As ever with outdoor events, especially in Liverpool, check the weather as temperatures can dip quite low in early April, while if the heavens do open, you want to make sure you have an umbrella with you to stay dry.

Most importantly enjoy your day at the races and hopefully you back a few winners and come away with some money in your pocket.
