DIY or Pro?

HIS & HERS TAKES AN HONEST LOOK AT WHEN TO DO IT YOURSELF & WHEN TO BRING IN THE EXPERTS TO GET YOUR HOME LOOKING AT ITS BEST.

Deciding whether to complete a home decoration, repair or maintenance task yourself or whether to seek the assistance of professionals can be a difficult decision. On the one hand, you want to save money. On the other hand, you do not want to do a botch job and end up costing yourself more money in the long run. So, how do you decide whether you should go DIY or pro? Read on to discover the factors that will help you to come to the right decision.

The first thing that needs to be considered is your frame of mind. After all, it does not matter whether the home task is painting or re-wiring the electrics, if you are preoccupied with something else, this is only going to be a recipe for disaster. It should go without saying, however, if you are pregnant or you are not feeling well, going pro is the only option. Moreover, if you have a lot on your plate at the moment and you are feeling stressed and run down as it is, the last thing you want to do is add more hassle to your life, as this is when mistakes happen.

If you are in the right frame of mind, the next element to think about is the nature of the task. If it is something that involves plumbing, wiring, or electricity, it is not wise to do this sort of task yourself unless you are experienced in these areas. Let’s start with plumbing issues. A lot of people read self-help articles on plumbing online, including ‘advice’ like ‘use a coat hanger to deal with blockages’ or ‘put chemicals down the toilet.’ Professional companies like AMS Drains will tell you that this only makes matters worse. In terms of re-wiring, do not put your family’s safety at risk merely to save a few pounds. It is never worth it! Electrical mistakes can lead to fires, so it’s not a risk that should be taken.

Finally, you need to consider what the scenario would be if the worst was to happen, i.e. you made a bit of a botch job. Would the impact be disastrous, i.e. the structure of your house would be impacted and it would cost you a lot of money? Or, is it something that would be easy and cheap to rectify? If the latter applies, a bit of DIY could be the right solution for you.

So there you have it: some of the key considerations that will help you to determine whether you should go DIY or pro. If you consider the factors that have been mentioned above, you should be able to come to the right decision for the task that is in question.
