Lake District: A view from a bedroom

THE BEAUTIFUL LAKE DISTRICT RECEIVES MILLIONS OF VISITORS EVERY YEAR, TRAVELLING FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD TO SEE THE NATURAL WONDERS OF THE UNIQUE FLORA AND FAUNA. IN SPITE OF GAINING POPULARITY AMONGST WRITERS AND POETS IN THE 19TH CENTURY, THE LAKE DISTRICT NATIONAL PARK WAS FOUNDED ON AUGUST 13TH IN 1951.

The Lake District’s astounding 885 square miles have many marvels that attract visitors every year, including England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike, and England’s largest natural lake, Windermere. The 21-year journey to achieve World Heritage Site status has finally ended this year, with judges considering the Lake District’s natural beauty and historical sites to be of immense value to the world.

Gaining World Heritage Site Status

Joining other sites such as the Taj Mahal in India and the Great Wall of China, the Lake District has become the UK’s first National Park to achieve the status. From single travellers to families and couples, the Lake District has much for all to see and do.

The historical importance that includes King Arthur’s Round Table, a Neolithic earthwork henge which dates from approximately 2,000 BC, is only one example of the ancient history of the Lake District. A history which will now assuredly be more protected and will provide the world with a great illustration of just how stunning and culturally vital the area is.

The Lake District National Park Authority, alongside 25 other partner organisations in the area, led a campaign and submitted their bid for World Heritage Site in 2016. This bid for World Heritage Site revolved around three key themes of conservation, identity, and inspiration. As a park valued by visitors and residents for over 250 years, the conservation of such a beautiful area that has inspired writers and artists of both the Picturesque and Romantic movements is vital for the identity of the location.

Through the past centuries of farming and quarrying, alongside water management and forestry, the landscape has been shaped into a continuously evolving one promising to keep enticing visitors. And these visitors also help to keep shaping the Lake District through the active interest in hiking, cycling, participating in water sports and, of course, trying the regional and delicious food.
