AS THE TEMPERATURES DIP, WE’VE BEEN COSYING UP INDOORS WORKING ON OUR TOP TIPS TO HYGGE UP YOUR HOME OVER PLENTY OF WARMING CUPPAS.
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the definition of the Danish word Hygge is: A quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being (regarded as a defining characteristic of Danish culture). Sounds good to us!
So as the wind roars outside and snow hits the windows, this seemed as good a time as any for His & Hers to share our top five tips to Hygge up your home (giving us a very convenient excuse for swerving the great outdoors until things start looking considerably more spring-like out there!)
- Keep the hot drinks coming. Whatever your drink of choice is, if you must have a psychological crutch or addiction (and frankly His & Hers must in order to make the transition from bed to life beyond the cocoon of the duvet worth contemplating), the first hot drink of the day is our favourite of all of our daily dependencies. To make your morning cuppa or coffee feel a bit more special and to Hygge things up a bit, we’d recommend treating yourself to some fancy cups that you’ll appreciate using every day. Countryside Art Mugs have a great selection.
- Invest in a super soft throw. We know that the charms of a good throw can sometimes be overlooked, but it’s surprising how much life’s simple pleasures, such as reading a good book or making a date with all of your favourite series on Netflix, can be enhanced by cosying up under a throw.
- Light a few candles. Yes, we know this is a great big cliché, but choosing a few candles with a fragrance that you love and then lighting them in the evening is virtually guaranteed to make your home feel cosier while requiring minimal effort (because let’s face it we want all of the up-side of a cosy home without being slaves to the Hygge!)
- Treat yourself to the nicest blinds or curtains you can afford. Admittedly, this Hygge tip does require more effort (and investment) than all of the others, but it’s amazing how much cosier your home feels when the blinds are down or the curtains are shut. And owning some good looking blinds or curtains is virtually guaranteed to make you feel like a proper grown-up. Plus blackout options in the bedroom will help you get a great night’s sleep and at the risk of sounding like your nan, they’ll also help to keep the heat in – always a bonus!
- Treat yourself to a plant you love, or freshly cut flowers, for no reason at all. Yes we enjoy seeing people receiving big bouquets on Valentine’s Day or Mother’s Day, but there’s something really special about treating yourself to some beautiful flowers for your home just because they look great and you know you’ll enjoy looking at them every day.
