Fact check: it probably is raining, with a chill, biting wind, and it could be discouraging you from braving it. Take inspiration from Maanasa’s winter poem. ‘Raindrops, wet, plump, slipping, sliding, splashing. Here comes the rainbow – playing, dancing, singing, warm, bright.’ That is how I feel about embarking upon a shopping expedition searching for bargains in January. Come in from the cold: put on a layer of glittering warmth and search for that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Take a friend, and go for the holistic experience, not just bagging a bargain.

At His & Hers Magazine, we are thinking back to the highlights of 2019, and looking at what is in store for 2020. The sales will end soon, so there’s no time to lose. It is probably wise to think longer term, too, about great places to shop all year round.
Liverpool ONE
One of the memorable moments of 2018 was the launch of ARKET in Paradise Street. It is a Nordic-inspired fashion and homeware shop. This stylish boutique offers classic design for women, men and children. The café provides good food in great surroundings. The philosophy behind this store is to create quality products that are made to last, rather than fast fashion which can be environmentally damaging. The result is seriously beautiful, well-made and durable pieces which are affordable, and an investment. I have a stone coloured skirt, that I acquired at the launch, which I treasure and is a staple of my wardrobe.
The sales season seems to last beyond January in Debenhams, and there is a dazzling range of designer clothes and homeware, at great prices. We visit the Aveda Blow Dry Bar inside Debenhams regularly, to get a quick lift and glam up for special events. Again it is the philosophy that inspires. Aveda uses natural ingredients and looks to a sustainable future. There is a wide selection of hair styles, from a fast and fabulous Dry Style Blow Dry to the ultimate lasting Power Stay Sensory Blow Dry. Every blow dry includes a free stress relieving ritual of renewal. Much recommended.
A Jo Malone London store has officially opened in Liverpool ONE. The brand specialises in perfumery, having curated scents since 1994. Our editor waxes lyrical about the whole range, and happily invests in scents and candles whenever she can. The company also has a concession in Harvey Nichols Beauty Bazaar.
Thornton’s relaunched in South John Street. The store has had a magical makeover. The café is a delight. Chocolate definitely is not just for Christmas. You can pick and customise your chocolate favourites, and take advantage of an expert wrapping service. We defy you to feel glum, once you have stepped inside. We loved the whole experience, and afternoon tea in the café will revive a dedicated bargain hunter.
It is but a short walk to the Royal Albert Dock, where you can find great places to eat, take a cultural turn around Tate Liverpool and visit The Museum of Liverpool. Maray Restaurant has half price, vegetarian small plates throughout January. Gusto Italian is an utterly beautiful venue and does amazing food. And there are deals to be had, if you become a Gold Rewards member.

We really appreciate Urban Calm, and love the relaxing, rejuvenating atmosphere. The massages are wonderfully soothing. Eyebrow tinting and waxing and eyelash tinting could be just the lift you need in January.
Smudge Boutique stocks fashion desirables that are just a little bit different. You can usually find something for that special occasion, with that glam vibe. Francesca Couture is also a popular destination for fashion finds. T. M. Lewin provides classic Jermyn Street.
The Everyman Cinema has attracted a great following. It is such a fun experience. There is a very well stocked, elegant and spacious bar. You can order food and drinks that you can enjoy whilst watching a movie, in luxurious surroundings, sitting on funky, comfy couches.

There are over 140 designer stores within the Outlet Village, where bargain prices always apply. You can check out: Monsoon, Hobbs, All Saints, French Connection, Gap, Ted Baker, and so many more. You can avail yourself of moisturisers, serums and facial oils at The Body Shop and Cosmetic Company Store. Polo Ralph Lauren Men is the original symbol of the modern preppy lifestyle. It is a combining of Ivy League classics and time-honoured English haberdashery with downtown styles and All-American sporting looks. My last year’s favourite, most desirable frock came from Polo Ralph Lauren Women. Their clothes are sophisticated with that touch of luxury. Polo Ralph Lauren Children is designed to reflect the timeless heritage and modern spirit of Ralph Lauren’s collections with signature mini classics.
And when you have shopped until you are ready to drop, you can make your way to Wagamama for seriously good food, such as Suika tuna, or similar. There are plenty of eateries to choose from: including Café Rouge and Carluccio’s at the Outlet Village.
All to play for. And so much to choose from. Time to bag a bargain and more besides.
