HIS & HERS PAID A VISIT TO ARKET, LIVERPOOL ONE’S NEWEST ADDITION, TODAY AND IT WAS LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT…
Words: Jean Hill
Arket had weaved its spell by the time we had sampled the café and salad bar. Yet there is so much more to explore and enjoy. The store design was led by Creative Director Ulrika Bernhardtz, and it has a wide open, relaxing vibe the moment you step through the door. The café is just beyond the entrance: in pale stone and wood. It’s inviting, and they do great coffee and an awesome puréed beetroot and feta cheese salad.
The staff are welcoming and genuinely helpful. These are classic clothes to form the backbone of a fashionista’s wardrobe. Hues of navy, black, terracotta and stone take pole position on the racks, with a little colour kick at intervals. I fell in love with a flowing shirt, in the softest cream silk. Beautiful pale tailored jackets can be found alongside little black tops. One of the assistants smilingly explained: ‘all the hard work is done for you’. The items that combine beautifully are all within arms’ length.
The kitchen-ware is top of the range. There is a casserole dish with an exquisite carved wooden handle worked into the lid. Arket is all about fine design. The shop reveals itself, section by section. Interestingly, there is almost certainly something to suit everyone. There is the classic trench-coat that somehow reminds me of ‘Cassablanca’. ‘Here’s looking at you kid.’ There is a children’s section that does look a little more playful and colourful. Bags and accessories beckon. Then I spot a slinky black dress with capped sleeves, that is a true classic to take me through summer and autumn and probably winter too.
There is a whole ethos at work where the staff want this to be a memorable and enjoyable experience. And that is what the store is designed to deliver. The designs work equally well for young adults and the more mature. There are structured and flowing pieces, and these will last and last. Think of them as investment pieces.
