Regular readers will know that the His & Hers team takes a (very) keen interest in the latest beauty trends, and we never get tired of hearing about how people have built their dream careers, so after meeting Dawn Robinson at the Royal Albert Dock this autumn, we couldn’t resist finding out a bit more about how she’s carving out a role for herself as a talented blogger, make-up artist and beauty editor.

How did you get into what would be a dream career for most of us, working as a blogger, editor, and make-up artist?

I have been blogging on and off for nearly two years but never really had the confidence to take it forward. However, over the last year I have been putting more time and effort into building and creating my niche and over the past six months my following has grown quite steadily. I am still relatively new to this whole industry and it’s still not my main career but I’m hoping as I continue to grow it can become more long-term. Working with the girls over at The Daily Struggle and becoming their beauty editor has helped immensely in giving me the confidence I needed to be more experimental and creative with my posts.

What does a typical day involve for you?

I have a 9-5 job working in the city centre, so any blogging or make-up is done in the evenings and weekends. Which I absolutely don’t mind, because it is my passion completely and I truly believe when you are doing something you love it never feels like a chore. I try to be super organised with my blogging and my Sunday is usually filled with finishing and scheduling content for my website and social media.

What are the best bits of your job?

When it comes to my blogging, I absolutely love trying new products and researching different brands. I love to write about things I would love to read, so whether that would be budget friendly make-up dupes or some top tips for winter skincare, I try to always keep in my mind who will be reading my posts.

When it comes to make-up, I love making other girls and women feel good in their own skin and make-up plays a huge part in helping with women’s confidence. I know myself how much better I feel when my skin is looking good and I have my favourite lipstick on. It really changes how you feel, and I love being a part of that.

You’re the Beauty Editor of the brilliant Daily Struggles. Could you share a piece of beauty advice with us for party season?

Don’t be afraid to try a little bit of colour or glitter; party season is well and truly the time of year you can get away with being a little creative. So, if you’ve always wanted to rock a red lip, now is the time to try. I always advise anyone to go with whatever look you love and whatever makes you feel confident – don’t worry too much about what is on trend, just be you!

What’s one of your favourite pieces of advice that you’ve been given over the years?

From a personal point of view, the best piece of advice I’ve ever been given is ‘this too shall pass’, this helps me when I am feeling a little overwhelmed or if I’m going through a difficult time. If I’m ever feeling anxious over anything, I always say to myself, this moment will pass, even when it feels like it never will, it does, and you do always have a better day.

How do you relax when you’re not working?

I like to try and keep healthy and active, so I go to the gym and personal train, go on lots of nice long walks and I love nothing more than catching up with my friends over some coffee and cake. Make-up plays a huge part in my downtime so I spend a lot of my time off trying new make-up looks and watching lots of YouTube tutorials!

Do you have any tips for readers who’d love to build a career in blogging or make-up artistry?

Honestly, the best advice I could give anyone is just to be yourself. Don’t try to copy anyone else’s style or be someone you’re not. I don’t have the biggest following, I don’t always take the perfect ‘blogger’ pictures and I think that works for me because I am just a normal Liverpool girl who absolutely loves what she does and works hard on it, not for followers but just because it makes me happy. If you have a passion it’s never too late to take it forward.

What are your plans for the coming months?

This is my favourite time of year and I have lots of fab blog posts to complete talking all things Winter, Christmas and sparkle!

I am currently building up my portfolio of make-up looks so I will be putting a bit more of my time into that.

Could you tell His & Hers about one of your career highlights so far?

A couple of weeks ago, I was having a real wobble about my blogging and I was comparing myself way too much to other people and was suffering with a complete dip in my confidence; that same day I received an email to say I had been nominated for seven blog awards. And even if nothing comes from it, It was the boost I needed to remind myself I am good enough.
