YOU MAY HAVE NOTICED THAT IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR WHEN MAGAZINES START URGING YOU TO ‘GET A BEACH BODY,’ SACRIFICING COCKTAILS AND ICE CREAM IN FAVOUR OF SQUATS AND CRUNCHES.
We promise we won’t do this. Not because we have anything against eating healthily and working out, but because we’ve seen too many people we know end up feeling unhappy and insecure while chasing the kind of poolside perfection that only exists in photoshoots.
It’s an open secret that we find our models’ best angles and shoot accordingly, often taking a lot of pictures before we get one that works. We also use great lighting, hugely experienced hair and make-up artists and occasionally still brighten and enhance the finished image in Photoshop (we’ve also been known to enhance a six pack with make-up on occasion). So if you want to get a few different shots and add an Instagram filter before posting your holiday pics online, that’s pretty low maintenance as far as we’re concerned!
We hope you’ll feel great on and off the beach this season, but if you do experience a summer wardrobe dilemma, we can promise you that you’re not alone. Here are five of His & Hers’s summer style hang-ups:
- Wanting to wear all-white-everything, but ending up sweltering in a LBD on one of the hottest days of the year, because no matter how many ads we’ve watched showing women roller-blading and generally taking on the world during their periods, we still don’t quite believe the hype. If you want to leave all fashion options on the table this season, including the lightest and floatiest of skirts, leakproof underwear has come a long way (and frankly looks better than most ‘period pants’).
- A desire to wear light, natural fabrics as the temperatures rise also makes us feel slightly more anxious about how well our deodorant will bear up during long days. If tube journeys, the walk to work or a quick lunchtime workout are testing your deodorant’s staying power, our trick is to keep a travel size in our bag.
- We want to say yes to last-minute plans, like a picnic in the park, and we’re keen to make the most of unexpectedly sunny days, but don’t want to risk getting burnt in the process. This is why you’ll find a good quality sunblock, sunglasses and an umbrella in our handbag throughout the season. That way we’re prepared for almost anything weather-wise!
- Towards the end of the summer, we may experience a twinge of regret about the Californian festival / spa retreat / Italian road trip that we didn’t end up experiencing this year. We may then realise that there’s no suitable opportunity left to wear our perfect festival outfit / maxi-dress or yoga gear. At this stage, we’ll just wear it anyway. No matter how cold or out of place we end up feeling as a result.
- Although we’ll spend most of the summer wearing day dresses or activewear, all of our wardrobe planning (and most of our budget) will be devoted to the two days of the summer when we go to the races / a wedding.
We’re proud to bring you this feature in association with Knix. They provided the fashion inspiration, but the tips (based on our summer fashion disasters over the years) are all our own!
